Over the past couple weeks the Sun Warriors have had some tremendous success at the Sectional Championship meets. It started with the girls on Thursday, May 12. The first event on the track was the 4×800 meter relay, and things could not have gotten off to a much better start. Knowing that they were seeded third, and that only the top two teams advance, all four girls ran PR splits. These combined efforts were good enough not only for a new school record of 10:48, but also fast enough to leap ahead of Evergreen Park and punch a ticket to state!
This first ever state qualifying performance (of any Solorio female) by Mariah Torres, Maria Garcia, Deisy Garcia, and Ruth Garcia was just the beginning. From there, the girls continued to pour it on and were rewarded for their efforts with a record number of All-Sectional honorees. They included Gaby Balderas (discus), Jessica Martinez and Isabel Torres (100 hurdles), Esther Franco and Ivette Camacho (3200), Deisy Garcia and Mariah Torres (1600), Ruth Garcia (800), and finally the 4×400 meter relay team of Giselle Tena, Jocelyn Lara, Marley Vargas, and Sophia Martinez. In addition to the 4×800, new school records were also set in the 100 hurdles (Isabel Torres), 300 hurdles (Elizabeth Torres), and the 4×100 (Isabel Torres, Elizabeth Torres, Teresa Dominguez, and Stephanie Vega).
Feeding off of this positive momentum from the girls, the boys had their Sectional meet on Thursday, May 19. Just like the girls, the boys saw tremendous improvements as an entire program with a number of PRs, school records, and a state qualifier! Starting with the state qualifier, senior Kevin Rodriguez showed hard work pays off. After waking up for four years of 6:30 throws practices, Kevin PRed and placed second in the discus, qualifying for the state meet. Also PRing and setting a new school record in the throws was senior Frank Staszel who placed 5th in the shot put earning him All-Sectional honors.
On the distance end, a young team of primarily first time Sectional competitors were not intimidated by the magnitude of the meet. The 4×800 relay team of Omar Luis, David Hernandez, Brandon Galicia, and Edgar Flores set a new school record of 9:11 as they placed 4th earning All-Sectional medals. Coming back in the 1600, senior Edgar Flores placed 5th with a PR of 4:58 and earning yet another All-Sectional medal. Congratulations to all the Sectional performers and good luck to those going on to compete at State!
