Strong Sun Warrior Showing at City
Over the past couple weeks the Sun Warriors have made multiple trips back and forth to Hanson Stadium to compete in the City Championship series. Through a series of trial meets (F/S girls, F/S boys, Varsity girls, and Varsity boys) the program arrived at Hanson on Saturday with the largest group of qualified athletes in the programs history. Not just satisfied with qualifying for the meet, all of those who competed did so valiantly. Throughout the previous four years combined, the only Sun Warrior to ever finish All-City was Markell Jefferson, who tied for 8th in the high jump in 2015.
Flipping this one in four years ratio on its head, the Sun Warriors left the City Championships this year with four All-City honors. Starting the meet off strong was the F/S girls 4×800 team of Ivette Camacho, Jocelyn Lara, Sophia Martinez, and Marley Vargas followed by the Varsity girls 4×800 team of Mariah Torres, Maria Garcia, Deisy Garcia, and Ruth Garcia. The All-City finish by both of these teams marked the first time the girls program scored at the City meet. For the boys, two strong individual performances by Brandon Galicia in the F/S 3200 and Chris Moran in the Varsity discus made sure that both levels of the boys were also in the final score at the end of the day.
Congratulations to all of these who competed and good luck as you move into Sectionals.
