Contrary to what one might think when first reading the title of this article, the slow start the Sun Warriors have experienced at the start of the outdoor season has nothing to do with their performance. Instead, it has everything to do with the weather. Unfortunately the weather put a damper on the first few outdoor meets with Lane Tech being a rain soaked affair and the following two meets being cancelled. FINALLY, over spring break the Sun Warriors saw some halfway decent weather and took full advantage at the Argo Invitational!
The boys Argo Invitational was the first Saturday of spring break. The 4×800 relay team of Lorenzo Rivera, Russel Cano, Martin Barrientos, and Brandon Galicia ran a time of 9:09 beating the old school record by two seconds. Junior Mike Collins threw for a distance of 41 feet and 10 inches, placing 3rd and setting a new school record in the shot put. This past Saturday the girls followed suit and competed at Argo. The sprints girls had a great day, breaking four school records! Elizabeth Torres set a new record in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Also setting new records was the 4×100 relay team made up of Torres, Giselle Niave, Yaritza Saucedo, and Leslie Vega and the 4×200 relay team made up of Maria Herrera, Giselle Niave, Yaritza Saucedo, and Melissa Zacarias.
Great job to both teams at Argo and good luck as they head into their final tune-up of the season before May!
