Setting a New Standard at Sectionals

After finally breaking through and getting Solorio’s first ever state qualifiers in 2016 (girls 4×800 and boys discus), this year’s Sun Warriors continued the record of success. Like the City meet, where the 2017 team had three more All-City performances than it had in 2016, the 2017 team also came away from Sectionals with three more state qualifiers than last year, for a total of five events making the trip down to Charleston.

In a déjà vu turn of events, the first two qualifiers, like 2016, were the girls 4×800 made up of sophomore Giselle Tena, sophomore Teresa Dominguez, junior Mariah Torres, and freshman Aryam Jaimes, along with Jose Ballesteros in the boys discus. Joining in on the fun was fellow thrower, junior Mike Collins who won the shot put and the Sectional champion boys 4×200 team of junior Jermaine Price, senior John Lewis, junior Quincy Patter, and sophomore Messiah Travis. Travis also qualified individually in the high jump, rounding out the list of qualifiers. The boys flexing their muscles at Sectionals was reminiscent of the strong performance of the girls at City. Both the girls and boys have reason to be optimistic as all but one of these students will be coming back next year.

Beyond those who qualified for State, Solorio also had an additional five events between the girls and boys that finished in third place, narrowly missing qualifying. Equally important, there were numerous personal and school records both by those competing at Sectionals and by those who couldn’t compete at Sectionals and thus finished their season on a high note at Sarah Goode. Congrats on a great season to those who competed in their last meet at Goode or Sectionals and to those who qualified. Good luck at the State Championship!
