On a day when the official first race didn’t begin until 10:00, the first Sun Warriors were out racing at 8:00. In an important show of team solidarity and preparing themselves for the future when they will be representing Solorio on the line, both the boys and girls JV teams got the show started by running a time trial at the regional course. Although there was a variety of highlights, the best performance was put in by Coach Dron, leading from start to finish.
Once the official races got underway, the girls toed the lines first. Leading the way for the ladies was junior Deisy Garcia, running 1:20 faster than this same race last year to finish in 7th, followed one second later by teammate Mariah Torres running 21:11 for 8th. Senior Maria Garcia continues to improve from a midseason injury, running tough as the third girl and showing she is ready to peak at Sectionals. Junior Yaritza Saucedo continues to perform when it matter most and sophomore Ruth Garcia pushed threw a case of the stomach flu to close the back door. Filling in for the senior Franco’s who were taking the ACT were freshmen Alondra Romero and Leslie Barboza finishing 37th and 38th respectively. Both ran tough and showed that the future is bright for Solorio’s deepest freshmen class yet.
A steady rain prior to the boys toeing the line didn’t sidetrack any of the boys. Senior captain Edgar Flores again led the way, running forty seconds faster than last year. Behind him was the freshmen duo of Brandon Galicia and Martin Barrientos, sophomore Robert Perez, junior Jesus Rivera, senior Miguel Rendon, and sophomore Omar Luis. Even after losing six out of last year’s top seven, when comparing times in a hypothetical dual meet the 2015 boys beat the 2014 boys 28-29. Congratulations to both teams for qualifying for the IHSA Sectional Championship by finishing 3rd (girls) and 4th (boys), and good luck as they go into Sectionals hungry to reconcile some unfinished business!
