Off and Running at Wheaton

Over the past few days, both the boys and girls track teams got their seasons started in Wheaton. Things kicked off with the boys Thursday night competing at Wheaton North. In a meet that featured Wheaton North, Naperville North, and other area powerhouses, the Sun Warriors competed valiantly. On the track, standout performances were had by a variety of runners. Picking up where he left off in cross country, freshman Brandon Galicia finished fifth in the 3200 as he worked with senior captain Edgar Flores who finished just ahead of him in fourth place. Galicia then came back in the 1600, running a time of 5:17 that tied the F/S 1600 record currently held by Flores. In the 800, sophomore Osvaldo Vasquez proved that strong winter conditioning truly does pay off, running a big PR and breaking 3:00 for the first time. In the field events, the Sun Warriors also had great performances. Special congratulations goes to senior Ricardo Villagomez who broke thirty feet his first time throwing shot put.

After a Friday with no meets, the girls were next on the track Saturday at Wheaton Warrenville South. As was the case with the boys, the 3200 featured a tandem of teammates working together. For the girls, it was sophomore Mariah Torres and senior Maria Garcia, both running great times of 13:01 and 13:05 respectively. Feeding off of these strong performances, junior Deisy Garcia won her heat of the 1600 in a time of 6:23. On the sprints side, junior Vanessa Ortiz had a great day. First she led her freshmen teammates Juana Rodriguez, Elizabeth Torres, and Isabel Torres to a strong finish in the 4×200 meter relay. From there, she joined a different cast of freshmen that included Teresa Dominguez, Ana Garcia, and Jessica Martinez, and helped to guide them to a great 4×400 meter relay by splitting a :67 in her leg. The girls performances were summed up best by Wheaton Warrenville South head coach Rob Harvey, who stated that the girls have improved by leaps and bounds over the past couple year.

Congratulations to both teams and good luck as you move on to Hinsdale Central (boys) and Evanston (girls).
