History Made at State

From the first team meeting back in January, it has been a team goal to go beyond the Conference success of recent years and expand that success into the City and State Championships Series. It is with great pride that the Sun Warriors can look back on the 2016 season and realize that these was indeed accomplished. Although it may have been easy to pack it in after the girls set a school record with 100 points and the boys won their fourth straight title at the Conference meet, none of this happened. Rather the team continued to strive for success with the girls 4×800 of Mariah Torres, Maria Garcia, Deisy Garcia, and Ruth Garcia finishing as all City along with Chris Moran in the discus. Those same four girls finished second in Sectionals, competing valiantly in state along with senior Kevin Rodriguez on the boys end who did the same, assuring both events were All-City and state qualifiers for their respective genders.

Although it would be easy to focus an article following the state championship on those who competed, that is far from the whole story. In reality, the real story lies not in those who competed in Eastern Illinois University, but rather the teammates who supported and challenged them on their road to Charleston. Whether it was those who were there for a 6:30 practice working their butts off despite the fact that there name wouldn’t be the one in the announcement for winning an event, those who still came to support and help out in meets they weren’t competing at, or simply those who provided much needed comic relief, friendship, and much more, the State success is truly that of the entire team. Congratulations to the girls 4×800 and the boys discus, but more importantly, congratulations to all of those who were part of the Sun Warrior track & field program this year. Your hard work and dedication truly did pay off.
