In the final two tune-ups before the City Championships, the Sun Warriors ventured out of the city to take on some of the best suburban teams. First up was the boys, competing at the Eisenhower relays on Thursday, April 20. On the varsity level, leading the way for the Sun Warriors was junior Jose Ballesteros setting a new school record in the discus and senior Michael Guzman with an almost 3 second personal best in the 400 meter dash. The fresh/soph boys were led by PRs in the mile from Lorenzo Rivera (5:06) and Russel Cano (5:11) along with the sophomore 4×400 relay team of Rene Macedo, Lorenzo Rivera, Julio Vaca, and Michael Perez – all of whom combined for a season best in the 4×400 despite doubling or tripling in multiple events.
The girls competed at Downers Grove North High School on Wednesday, April 26, coming away with many record breaking performances against some of the premier track teams in the state. On the sprints side Elizabeth Torres broke her own school record in the 100 meter hurdles and Yaritza Saucedo broke her own school records in the 400 and 200 meter dashes. Other outstanding performances included Jessica Martinez with a 4 second personal best time in the 300 meter hurdles and Marylin Garcia with a 4 second personal best in the 400 meter dash. On the distance end, Giselle Tena set the fresh/soph school record in the 1600 meter run (5:56). In addition, Adamri Reyes, Ruth Garcia, and Teresa Dominguez all came away with personal best times in the 800 meter run.
Great job to all the boys and girls who competed and good luck at City!
