The girls show off their new Nike gear prior to their race

Busy Week Prior to Racing Season

With the City Championships right around the corner, the Sun Warriors had a busy week of meets that provided the opportunity for some fine tuning prior to the start of the racing season. The first of the two meets was the Nike North Side / South Side Challenge. Representing the South Side, Solorio sent its top 7 boys and girls. On the girls end, senior Maria Garcia appeared back to her old self running like a true number one. Not far behind her was the pack that included sophomores Mariah Torres and Ruth Garcia, along with junior Deisy Garcia. Having strongly built throughout the entire race, junior Yaritza Saucedo and senior Esther Franco were in as the five/six runners. Coming in at seven with a strong race was senior Erica Franco.

On the boy’s side, Nike gave the boys the first opportunity to run some underclassmen in the varsity race. The results spoke for themselves. Senior captain Edgar Flores led the way, followed by the freshmen tandem of Brandon Galicia and Martin Barrientos. Junior Alex Nino had his best race of the year followed by sophomore Robert Perez closing the back door. Also running a strong race together were junior Jesus Rivera and senior Miguel Rendon. All of this was good enough for the boys to finish 9th and girls 7th in the 24 team meet.

Just a few days later, the Sun Warriors were back at it at the Rich Central Olympian Run. Both genders had multiple bright spots at Rich Central. Sophomore Omar Luis made his debut in a varsity race, standing out in a big way for the boys. Not intimidated in the least bit, Luis packed it up with fellow teammates Jesus River and Miguel Rendon to finish 75th, 76th, and 77th less than a second apart in 18:38 and 18:39. While Luis was standing out for the boys, junior Marylin Garcia made sure that they girls had a standout performance as well. Proving what a strong spring and summer can do for someone, Garcia ran a new personal best of 28:55. Good luck to both the boys and girls teams as they gear up for the City Championships on Saturday, October 17 at Washington Park.
