For the fourth year in a row the Sun Warriors competed in the Sectional Championship hosted at Kress Creek and for the fourth year in a row the lady Sun Warriors showed major team improvements. Four years ago, the girls were 335 points away from the 5th place team. As the years have progressed, they have dropped that difference to 211 points in 2014, 160 points in 2015, and finally down to only 50 points this year. Leading the way for the girls once again was freshman Kaylani Esteban. Although disappointed to miss qualifying for state by only 2 seconds, Esteban once again showed the future is bright by running a PR and finishing with the highest place in school history. Also PRing was junior Mariah Torres and senior Deisy Garcia, along with sophomore Teresa Dominguez whose gutsy performance helped close the back door on a great team race!
Stealing the show for the boys was once again freshman Adonaliz Hernandez. Running the race of his life, Hernandez simply refused to give up his state qualifying position, running with pure guts. In the process he recorded the best place in school history (18th) and become Solorio’s first ever cross country state qualifier! The excitement of his teammates once his name was called at the awards ceremony reiterated just how much he relied on their support. Whether it was his fellow top 7 team members David Hernandez, Robert Perez, Brandon Galicia, Alex Nino, Martin Barrientos, and Xavier Morales, or encouragement from seeing the performances of teammates like Russel Cano’s 34 second mile PR on Friday night, Hernandez’s accomplishment was a total team effort. Great job to all the boys and girls on a fabulous season and good luck to Adon on Saturday!
